Abstract
The object of the research is The Pursuit of Happyness movie directed by Gabriele Muccino. The study focuses on the objectives of the study and to analyze the structural elements of the movie and to analyze the social background and social life in that movie based on sociological analysis. In conducting this study, the writer uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the script of The Pursuit of Happyness movie. While secondary data are reviews of the movie that collected from various sources and other data which deal with the research. In analyzing the data, the writer used two approaches. Firstly, structural analysis approach is used to analyze the elements of the movie. It consists of the narrative elements of the movie that reveals characters and characterization, setting, plot, point of view and theme. The technical elements of the movie covering mise en scene, cinematography, sound and editing. The last, discussion of the movie. Secondary, the sociological approach is used to analyze the social background of the film that has setting of time in United States at the turn of 21st century that influenced the social aspect, economic aspect, political aspect, science and technology aspect, cultural aspect, and religious aspect. The result of the study is as follows. First based on the structural analysis, it is clear that in this movie, the director, Gabriele Muccino wants to extend a movie message that hard-working is a key of successful life. Second, based on sociological analysis, it is evident that this movie reflects the American dream of American society
