Abstract

The absence of a husband for a long time makes the interpersonal relationship between the TNI wife and husband decrease due to the inability of the wife to adjust to the changes that occur, thus making the wife experience loneliness. This study aims to understand and describe the loneliness of TNI wives who live in battalions during the husband's assignment. This research is a mixed method, beginning with using quantitative methods followed by qualitative methods. Data collection techniques using purposive sampling method, namely: a) quantitative data collected using the R-UCLA loneliness scale to determine the loneliness level of 100 TNI wives continued, b) qualitative data by conducting interviews with 6 TNI wives selected based on the number of lonely scale scores R -UCLA. Quantitative data analysis uses descriptive statistics, and qualitative data uses thematic analysis. The results showed a percentage of 100 TNI wives, namely 1% with high loneliness categories, 17% with moderate loneliness categories, 35% with low loneliness categories, and 47% with very low loneliness categories. Wives with high and moderate loneliness tend to have more complex problems including children's problems, homework, communication with their husbands, and the burden and responsibility in the organization. Lack of social relations and communication problems make the wife lose her husband as an intimate figure so that the wife experiences loneliness. The causes of loneliness occur due to the condition of the wife at the time of leaving the task and the conflict area where the husband is assigned which causes communication problems. This way of dealing with loneliness is done by focusing on religious activities and utilizing social relations.
