Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the linguistic forms and the meaning (lexically and contextually) of English register in a war game. The data are registers that are taken from communication between main players to another player in the war games. The data sources are Counter Strike, Brother in Arms, and Red Alert. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method by selecting the registers words, which can be found in the war game. The first step of analyzing data is that the writers identify the linguistic form of each English register. Then described the lexical and contextual meaning of register in the war game and then compared the meaning lexically and contextually as what proposed by Poedjosoedarmao theory. The results of this research show that: 1) The linguistic forms of the register in a war game are in the noun, verb, adjective, and compound word. The real meaning of the word is narrower than its new meaning: 5 data (11,11%). The new meaning and the real meaning of the word can share some features of meaning: 8 data (17,78%)). The real meaning and the new meaning of the word is identical: 13 data (28,89%). The real meaning and the new meaning of the word is quite different: 4 data (4,48%), the new meaning does not have the real meaning: 3 data (6,66%).
