Abstract

This research studies the linguistic forms, category of taboo words, function of taboo words and factor influencing the use of taboo words. The object of this research is the English taboo words used in Erin Brockovich movie manuscript. The data source of the taboo words is Erin Brockovich movie manuscript. In gathering the data the researcher uses the observation and the documentation methods. To answer the problem statements raised in this research the researcher uses the following theories: 1) The linguistic forms such as word, phrase, clause and sentence forms; 2) The categories of taboo words which derived from the taboo words notion; 3) The functions of taboo utterance which is based on Hyme’s SPEAKING formula; and 4) The factors which influence the use taboo which is based on language and gender notion. The results of this research are: 1) The most general linguistic form of taboo words in Erin Brockovich movie manuscript is nouns (17 words or 51,2% r); 2) The most common taboo words category is obscenity (15 words or 45,4%) 3) Substantially, the entire data focus on the Key or manner of the speaker but with different functions such as; to discredit 51%, to blame 45%, and to create identification 3%; and 4) There are 21 (63,63%) factor influencing the use taboo words which Erin said to express machismo.
