Abstract
Conventional therapy is generally used as cancer therapy which has high costs and high side effects. The other therapeutic alternatives are needed, for example therapy with red spinach (Amaranthus gangeticus). The purpose of this study was to determine the cytotoxic activity of ethanolic extract of red spinach leaves against HeLa cells and WiDr cells and to determine the class of compounds in the ethanolic extract of red spinach leaves. Red spinach leaves were extracted by maceration method using 90% ethanol. The cytotoxic test was performed by MTT assay method and the results are IC50 values. The thin layer cromatography (TLC) method with silica GF245 as stationary phase and hexane: ethyl acetate (5: 5) as mobile phase was done to analyse compounds in the red spinach extract. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of red spinach leaves had an IC50 value of 209 μg/mL on HeLa cells and did not show 50% inhibition of population on WiDr cells. The ethanolic extract of red spinach contains flavonoid, phenolic, and saponin. Based on IC50 values, red spinach leaves did not have potential to be developed as anticancer against HeLa cells and WiDr cells.
