Abstract
African plants (Vernonia amygdalina Delile) are medicinal plants that claimed to have phytotherapy activities such as anticancer, antibacterial, antihepatotoxic, antioxidants, serum lipid modulation, and fungitoxic. Anticancer activity of African leaves extract have been widely studied against MCF-7 cells, nasopharing cancer cells, prostate cancer cells, HeLa cells and WiDr cells. The aim of this study was to determine the cytotoxic activity of methanolic extract of African leaves (Vernonia amygdalina Delile) on HeLa and WiDr cells. Extraction of African leaves was done by maceration method for five days using methanol as the solvent. Phytochemical screening was carried out to identify the compounds in methanolic extract of African leaves. Cytotoxic test was carried out using MTT assay method. The methanolic extract of African leaves has IC50 values of 174.25 g/mL against HeLa cells and 247.91 g/mL against WiDr cells and it contains secondary metabolites of flavonoids, saponins, sesquiterpenes and steroids. Methanolic extract of African leaves does not have potential to be developed as an anticancer agent.
