Abstract
Women have higher risk to get cancer than men, especially breast cancer. One of the most common cancer treatments is chemotherapy. Chemotherapy has many side effects, therefore another alternative drug is needed. Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) is one of plants that has anticancer activity. This study arms to test cytotoxic activity of methanolic extract of pigeon pea leaves against MCF-7 and T47D cells. The extraction was carried out using the maceration method with methanol as solvent. Qualitative tests of compounds used the phytochemical screening method to identify groups of alkaloids, steroids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, quinones, and coumarin. The concentration series of pigeon pea leaves used for the cytotoxic test using the MTT method were 50, 100, 200, 400, 800 µg/mL. The results showed that pigeon pea extract contains steroids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, and tannins. Cytotoxic test results showed that methanolic extract of pigeon pea leaves had an IC50 value of 93,353 µg/mL against T47D cells and had an IC50 value of 566,454 µg/mL against MCF-7 cells. The methanolic extract of pigeon pea leaves did not have the potential to be developed as an anticancer agent for MCF-7 and T47D cells.
