Abstract
Breast cancer is a type of cancer with the second highest prevalence of cancer after cervical cancer. Some cancer treatments have side effects. Bitter melon fruit (Momordica charantia L.) contains compounds that have anticancer activity. This study aims to determine cytotoxic activity of ethanolic extract of bitter melon fruit on MCF-7 and T47D cancer cells and identify natural compounds in the ethanolic extract of bitter melon fruit. Bitter melon was extracted using maceration method with 96% ethanol. The method used to determine the cytotoxic activity of bitter melon extract was the MTT assay method with the extract concentrations series of 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 µg/mL. The compounds in the extract were analyzed using thin layer chromatography (TLC). Cytotoxic tests result showed that the ethanolic extract of bitter melon fruit had IC50 values of 408,823 µg/mL on MCF-7 and 155,459 µg/mL cells in T47D cells. The results of TLC showed that the ethanolic extract of bitter melon fruit contains terpenoids, flavonoids, steroid saponins, phenolics, and alkaloids. Ethanolic extract of bitter melon fruit has no potential cytotoxic activity to be developed.
