Abstract

Uric acid is the deposition of the final product of purine metabolism and will form monosodium crystals. The failure of excretion of uric acid by the kidneys causes uric acid cannot be excreted together with urine. Based on previous research, basil and bay leaves have antihyperuricemia activity because they contain the flavonoid compounds of luteolin, quercetin, apigenin, kaemferol which have the potential to inhibit xanthine oxidase enzyme activity. This study aims to measure the ability of the ethanolic extracts of basil and bay leaves to decrease uric acid levels and to compare the ability between extracts as antihyperuricemia. Twenty male wistar rats of divided into 5 groups including negative control group, positive control and three extract groups. All groups were induced with 3ml of 50% chicken liver juice homogenate 2 times daily for 9 days. Positive control group was given allopurinol dose of 10 mg / kgBW. As many as 3 groups of animals were treated with 50mg / kgBB basil leaves extract, bay leaves 50mg / kgBW and the combination of both doses of 50mg / kgBW. After being declared hyperuricemia (> 1.8 mg / dL) the preparation were given for 9 days. Blood samples were taken through the eye (orbital sinus). Uric acid levels were measured with FS-TBHBA reagents by UV / VIS spectrophotometry (546 nm). Hypothesis testing used to analyze were the non parametric statistical test in the form of Kruskall Wallis test and Mann whitney test to analyze differences in uric acid levels. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of basil leaves, bay leaves and the combination with the dose of 50mg/kgBW each, given for 9 days were able to reduce uric acid levels compared to negative controls (p <0.05). The treatment of a combination of basil leaves extract and bay leaves extract 50mg / kgBW doses has the simillar effect to positive control 0.72 ± 0.09 mg / dL (p> 0.05).
