Abstract
The plasma carburizing process of AISI 4140 steel is then tested for hardness with the Vikers test method and the microstructure is observed. The first stage of AISI 4140 steel material was cut into 30 test samples, then polishing with Autosol using sandpaper with sizes 120, 600, 1000, 2000 and 5000 mesh. Polished samples are carburized with temperature variations from temperatures of 300oC, 350oC, 400oC, 450oC and 500oC where the pressure is given at 1.6 mbar with a time of 3 hours. From the test after experiencing heating, the optimum hardness value obtained at a temperature of 350oC is 312.62 (HVN) greater than the hardness of raw material 135.36 (HVN). This is because the deposition rate is too large but the rate of diffusion and solubility of interstitial carbon atoms on AISI 4140 steel cannot follow the deposition rate so there will be a buildup of carbon at the surface of the spesimen. The SEM test results show that there is a very thin layer that cannot be identified which can be deposited on the surface of AISI 4140 steel, whereas from the EDS test results it can be seen that the chemical element is dominated by iron (Fe) and carbon (C) elements with a mixture of other elements such as oxygen (O) and Calsium (Ca) Keywords: AISI 4140, Carburizing plasma, Vikers, Microstructure, Hardness
