Abstract
The increasing demand for petroleum is a challenge that must be anticipated by finding alternative energy sources. Biodiesel is an alternative energy from vegetable oils that can be used as fuel. One of the potential vegetable oil producers is sunflower seeds. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to make biodiesel from sunflower seed oil by transesterification process. Biodiesel was made by going through several steps, namely the making of sunflower seed oil by extraction with the ratio of 1: 3 sunflower seeds with solvent within 120 minutes and the temperature of 65°C, then the making of sunflower seed biodiesel with transesterification method of molar ratio of oil with methanol 1: 6, CaO catalyst was added from chicken egg shell with variable of temperature and amount of catalyst. After that, the biodiesel was done viscosity test,% yield, density, acid number and biodiesel composition with Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The result showed that the viscosity is between 3,49-6,34 cSt, the optimum yield of 82,90% at 60oC temperature variation of 3,00% catalyst, the resultant density was 0,83-0,889 gr / ml, the acid number generated 0.33 -0.63 mg KOH/g and GC-MS results show a biodiesel conversion of 97,28%.
