Abstract

Friction stir welding (FSW), a solid state joining technique, is a giant step in the ever constant endeavour of joining technology for materials. The superior qualities of Friction stir welding (FSW) led its usage in joining Aluminum alloys for aerospace, marine, automotive and several applications of commercial importance. This research uses the method of friction stir welding by using a milling machine to find out the effect of parameters of fede rate variation 30 mm / min, 35 mm / min, and 40 mm / min and the constant parameters are 1500 rpm tool rotation speed and the tilt angle tool of 30 towards on mechanical properties and micro structure on dissimilar metals joint between SS400 carbon steel and AA6061 with 3mm thickness. Then the tests include tensile test, macro hardness test, and micro structure test. The results showed that the feed rate 30 mm / min had the highest tensile strength of 66,5 MPa. This was influenced by the temperature produced by feed rate. In the weld nugget region the highest hardness value in the weld nugget of 105,577 HVN. The micro structure in the HAZ area is grain growth due to the received temperature, while on the weld nugget shows a small and tight micro structure look.
