Abstract
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is the welding process uses heat due to rotation of the tool which rubs against the base metal under large axial pressure at the welding area. The aim of research is to find out the effect variation of feed rate on mechanical characteristic and micro structure on dissimilar metals joint between AA2024 Aluminium and SS400 Carbon Steel with 3mm thickness. The welding process uses a milling machine with a butt joint connection type. The constant speed of rotation tool is 1500 rpm. The tilt angle tool is 30. variations of feed rate parameters are 30 mm/min, 40 mm/min, and 50 mm/min. The welded spesiment tests include tensile test, macro hardness test, and micro structure test. The results showed that the feed rate 30 mm / min has the highest tensile strength of 18.6 Mpa that is influenced by the temperature produced by feed rate. The hardness value weld nugget is influenced by the Intermetallic compound FexAly and the highest hardness value in the weld nugget is 208.021 HVN in feed rate 30mm/min. The micro structure in the HAZ area is grain growth due to the received temperature, while on the weld nugget shows a tight micro structure picture.
