Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe (1) the structure of the novel, (2) the value of character education, and (3) its relevance as a reference in literary teaching materials in high school. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method. The data in this study are in the form of words, paragraphs and sentences in the novel that show the value of character education. The data source of this study is Novel Menggapai Matahari (MM). The data collection technique of this research is using document analysis, technical review, recording techniques and interviews. The validity of the data used in this study is theoretical triagulation, and data triagulation. The results of this study describe (1) the structure of the novel builder namely themes, story facts and means of story, (2) the value of character education found there are 18 values of character education namely religious values, honesty, tolerance, discipline, hard work, independent, democratic , curiosity, national spirit, love of the homeland, respect for achievement, friendship / communicative, love of peace, love of reading, caring for the environment, social care, and responsibility. And (3) the novel Reaching the Sun is appropriate and relevant as a literary teaching material in high school class XI Basic Competence 3.11 analyzes messages from one fiction book that is read and Basic Competencies 4.11 compiles a review of messages from one fiction book that is read.
