Abstract
The use of language in everyday life activity can indicate differences in both form and meaning of the language. The Language differences in both its form and meaning can be found in the choice of words or sentence structure spoken by a person. Each language phenomenon has a word with specific meaning according to social environment and arbitrariness of language use such as the curse word bajingan. In attempt of studying the meaning of bajingan word among community of ox cart coachmen of Bantul, Yogyakarta, researcher used appropriate discipline, namely communication ethnography. The research used descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected by using in-depth interview and a caretaker of ox cart coachmen of Bantul, Yogyakarta was selected as informant of the research. Informant was taken by using purposive sampling technique. The data was analyzed by using interactive analysis, namely data reduction, data presentation and conclusion or verification. Finding of the research showed that the change of meaning of word bajingan constructed from the word bajingan that was originally having a meaning of ox cart coachman and the meaning has been still maintained in community of ox cart coachmen of Bantul, Yogyakarta. But the meaning of the word bajingan had shifted be a word of derision with meaning of evil and naughty. It was based on by the way of pronunciation of the word making the meaning of the word bajingan interpreted and perceived differently by people.
