Abstract
Indigofera plant is used as a blue dye because it contains glucoside indican. Indigo blue color is extracted from the leaves by using solvent aquades. To enhance the coloring, the fabric must be mordanted so that the fats, starchs, oils and debris residue in the weaving process can be eliminated. The process of mordanting is generally divided into pre-mordanting, meta-mordanting and post mordanting. This study studies the meta-mordanting process which is the process by which the dyeing of cloth is carried out by dipping the cloth in the metal compound mixed with the dye first and then after washing, the cloth is dyed back with the dye. Mordan used was alum because it has water-solube properties. Other variables to be tested in this research were temperature of 40,60,90˚C; pH of 3,4,5; and time of 15, 30, 60 minutes, that will be observed about the color strength in cotton cloth with 3 times of dyeing frequency. Absorbance value was measured response to changes in these variables. The best results in the meta-mordantingprocess were achieved at pH 3, temperature 40˚C and 15minutes for the time. The absorbance value under these conditions had a good degree of stability and shows the highest value, so that the color result was good.
