Abstract

The purpose of this research to determine the relationship between self-control and gratitude with consumptive behavior in students. The hypothesis proposed that there is a negative relationship between self-control and gratitude with consumptive behavior in students. The sampling technique that used is purposive sampling. The population that used by the researcher is about 1.249 active students Faculty of Psychology University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta. The sample are most of active students aged 18-21 years in total of 150 students. The technique of collecting data are using Consumptive Behavior Scale, Self-Control Scale and Gratitude Scale. The analysis of data used nonparametric spearman analysis. The results of the data analysis in this research is correlation coefficient rxy = -0,657; sig. (1-tailed) = 0,000 (p ≤ 0.05) it means that there is a very significant negative relationship between self-control with consumptive behavior on students, correlation coefficient rx2y = -0,130; sig. (1-tailed) = 0,056 (p ≤ 0,05) it means taht there is no relation between gratitude and consumptive behavior on student. The effective contribution shows 44,7% for self-control and gratitude to consumptive behavior on student, and the remains shows 55,3% that influenced by the other factor. From the results of the study also known that the student's consumptive behavior is moderate, student self-control is moderate, and the gratitude of students is high.
