Abstract
Background: denture is an artificial teeth used to replace missing teeth and its surrounding tissue. The material commonly used as a base plate is acrylic resin, but it can easily fractured. One of the factors associated with mechanical strength is volumetric fiber.Objective: this study evaluated the effect of volumetric silkworm fiber on the transverse strength of acrylic resin base plate repaired and volumetric silkworm fiber addition on the transversestrength of acrylic resin base plate repaired.Methods: This study was a laboratory experimental with post-test only control group design. The samples were 65 mm x 10 mm x 2.5 mm which consisted of 27 samples divided into 3 groups, i.e. groups without fiber (0%), volumetric silkworm fiber 1.8% and 3.6%. All samples were prepared to create 3 mm gap and made bevel 45o. The transverse strength tested using a universal testing machine. Result: showed differences in mean values of all three groups of samples. Volumetric that had highest transverse strength is volumetric of silkworm fiber 3.6% (95.92±1.24 MPa). Differences of the effects were tested using the one-way ANOVA test and the LSD test. The result of statistical test show that there was difference between each groups with significance value p=0.000 (p <0.05). Conclusion: there were volumetric effects of silkworm fiber on the transverse strength of acrylic resin base plate repaired, and the addition volumetric 1.6 % and 3.6% of silkworm fibers might improve the transverse strength acrylic resin base plate repaired.
