Abstract

This research aims to describe the process of teaching writing using Genre-based Approach and to increase the students’ writing skill using Genre-based Approach. The object of the study is written cycle based on Genre-based Curriculum in the second year students in MTSN Mlinjon Klaten. This research is to reveal the procedures of teaching writing using Genre-based Approach, kinds of activities carried out during the teaching writing, and the problems faced by the teacher. This research is an Ethnographic research that describes the implementation of Genre-based Approach in teaching writing. To collect the data, the writer takes some methods; namely are (1) observation, (2) document, and (3) interview. Procedures for analyzing data are reduction of the data, display of data, and verification. The result of this research shows that: the procedure used by the teacher at MTsN Mlinjon Klaten is appropriate with the theory of Genre. There are two patterns; the first pattern is BKOF-MOT-JCOT-ICOT and the second pattern is BKOF-MOT-ICOT. This research also shows the kinds of classroom activities in each stage. In BKOF, the activities are asking questions and giving explanation; giving model of text is the activity in MOT; in JCOT, the activity is making group in doing activities; and the activities in ICOT are giving the task in the classroom and giving task for homework.
