Abstract

This research aims to observe the methods used in teaching English at the fifth year of SDN Tunggulsari II Laweyan Surakarta. Specifically, it is to describe the design used in teaching English and the procedure in the classroom and the problems faced by the teacher. In this research the data are derived from event, informant, and document. There are three techniques in collecting the data namely: observation, interview and documentation. The researcher uses the ethnography in conducting the study. The research indicates that, first, the design used in teaching English includes the objectives, teacher’s role and, students’ role. The objective of the teaching English is to motivate the students in accepting the English as the first foreign language. Teacher’s Roles are as a motivator, as a counselor, as a communicator, and as a facilitator. The roles of the students are as a subject and a negotiator. Second, the type and procedure of teaching English in the classroom emphasized vocabulary, grammar and reading. Third, the problems faced by the teacher in teaching of English are (1) the teacher has taught about how to write and pronounce words repeatedly, (2) Sometimes the students do not focus on the lesson, (3) the teacher should repeat to explain the materials to the students to make them understand the lesson. To overcome the problems faced by teacher, the teacher (1) asked the other class to go home and close the door, (2) the teacher gives point to make the students active which it can give the students spirit to learning English, (3) the teacher asked one by one to answer the question.
