Abstract
African leaves are plants that have some chemical content, one of which flavonoids that can function as antibacterial. Dry african leaf is macerated with 96% ethanol solvent because it is able to dissolve flavonoids from African leaves. The African leaf ethanol extract was formulated in gel preparation form, the base of thr gel use the combination of propylene glycol and carbopoly 940. The study aimed to determine the antibacterial ability of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus epidermidis from african leaf formulated in gel preparation with some variation of propylene glycol and carbopol 940 to know the effect on gel physical properties. Used some amount of carbopol with a range of 0.5-2 % and propylene glycol 5-15 %. Gel physical tests include organoleptic observations, viscosity measurements, adhesion, dispersion and pH, while antibacterial tests using the well diffusion method. The antibacterial preliminary test of African leaf ethanol extract using 4 series of extract concentration of 5%, 10%, 20% and 40%, selected 20% concentration with 13 mm inhibition zone against Staphylococcus epidermidis and 12 mm to Pseudomonas aeruginosa as active substance in gel formula . Gel optimized using factorial design method with design expert trial version 11 software, obtained the optimum formula value with the amount of carbopol 0.94 gram and propylene glycol 8.17 gram.
