Abstract
The aim of that research is to 1) identify the translation techniques used to translate the subtitle of Pride and Prejudice movie, and 2) to describe the quality of the translation of the subtitle based on the three aspects used to define quality of translation, namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The research is a qualitative one and the objects of this research are the translation techniques and the quality of translation of Pride and Prejudice subtitle. The source of data in that research is the two subtitles of Pride and Prejudice movie, both in source language and in target language. After that, there is the source of information collected from raters for the questionnaire who are asked to assess the quality of Pride and Prejudice subtitle translation. Technique of collecting data in that research is based on content analysis and questionnaires that are distributed to the raters. The validation of data in that research uses a triangulation source method by using both of the English subtitle, the Indonesian subtitle, and the information collected from raters based on the results of the questionnaires. That research used Ethnography model of Spradley to analyze the data of the research. The findings of that research shows that: First, the translator found 13 techniques of translation out of 18 techniques introduced by Molina and Albir (2002). The techniques found in the Pride and Prejudice subtitle are transposition (45 data or 23.93%), modulation (26 data or 13.82%), established equivalent (19 data or 10.10%), adaptation (16 data or 8.51%), linguistic compression (13 data or 6.91%), generalization (13 data or 6.91%), borrowing (13 data or 6.91%), reduction (12 data or 6.38%), particularization (9 data or 4.78%), amplification (7 data or 3.72%), linguistic amplification (6 data or 3.19%), literal translation (6 data or 3.19%), and variation (3 data or 1.59%). Second, the three aspects of translation quality, namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability based on the questionnaire results show that 1256 data got the score 3 (high) at three aspects of accuracy, acceptability and readability with 74.23% percent, 334 data got the score 2 (medium) or 19.73%, and 102 data got the score 1 (low ) or 6.02%. This means that the Pride and Prejudice subtitle does have a high level of translation quality based on the three aspects of translation quality, namely accuracy, acceptability, and readability. Keywords: translation technique, accuracy, acceptability, readability, subtitle, Pride and Prejudice.
