Abstract

This study aims at describing the implementation of contextual teaching learning in teaching writing to the seventh year students of SMPN 3 Wonogiri and describe the strengths and weaknesses of teaching writing by using Contextual Teaching Learning. The writer applies descriptive qualitative as the type of research. The data of this research are interview scripts, field note, the materials and worksheet. She uses observation, interview, and the students worksheet for collecting the data. The techniques for analyzing data are reducing the data, verifying the data, and drawing conclusion and suggestion. The results of the study show that (1) The teacher does not implement the seventh elements of Contextual Teaching Learning. It was seen in teaching learning process of teaching writing in which the teacher used five components of Contextual Teaching Learning namely (a) inquiry, (b) modeling, (c) question, (d) reflection, and (e) authentic assessment. From those components, the components that are not used by the teacher in teaching writing are learning community and constructivism. 2) The strengths of teaching learning process in teaching writing using Contextual Teaching Learning are the students felt enjoy and fun in learning English particularly in writing, the students have high motivation in learning writing, and the teacher can improve the students grammar and vocabulary in teaching writing. (2) The weaknesses of teaching learning process in teaching writing using Contextual Teaching Learning are the students get difficulties to start writing for getting start, the students get difficulties in grammatical structure, and the teacher has difficulty in giving score to the students
