Abstract

This research aimed to understand the way of self-expression of junior high school students through social media and the meaning of it. The method used in this research is qualitative phenomenology descriptive. Interviews and documentations are being used as the data collecting techniques. The validity of the research data used member checking with content analysis. The subjects of this study were 12 to 16 year-old junior high school students. The result of this research shows that the activities of the majority teenagers while using social media are experiences sharing through pictures and status uploads. Those things can be interpreted as a way of self-expression of teenagers. The intensity of those teenagers on doing self-expression through social media is ±1 - ±4 times in a day. Facebook becomes to be the social media which is being used by teenagers the most often because it is the most popular social media at the time in which teenagers motivation to express themselves is because of the desire to express their feelings and to dhare their personal pictures as an entertainment. Mind finally becomes to be the influencing factor when somebody would like to share the current situation happening, it will be done by sharing through pictures or videos in order to get responds from others. The satisfaction of teenagers which is appear is in form of a proud of themself after expressing themself in social media just like hapenning to other social media users. The satisfaction is also influenced by the mood of the teenagers in which their moods are changing from time to time. The meaning of self-expression for teenagers is to get an existence which is motivated by the desire to share their works when they finally become to be well-known person.
