Abstract
The major problem of this study is to reveal the struggle for freedom as reflected in Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot film. The objectives of the study are to analyze the structural elements of the film in order to identify the unity of the film and to analyze the major characters of the film based on the individual psychological approach. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the script of The Patriot film. While secondary data are reviews of the film which is collected from various sources and other data which deal with the research. In analyzing the data, he applies two approaches. Firstly, structural analysis approach is used to analyze the elements of the film. It consists of character and characterization, setting, plot, point of view, theme of movie and style. Secondly, individual psychological approach is used to analyze the struggle of Benjamin Martin as the major character. Based on the analysis of the Roland Emmerich’s The Patriot film using individual psychological theory which consists of fictional finalism, inferiority feeling and compensation, striving for superiority, style of life, social interest, and creative self, the writer concludes that Benjamin Martin as the major character wants to make South Carolina free from British colonialism. He struggles by war and becomes the commander in his militia and Continental army in order to make his goal achieved.
