Abstract
The most commonly used irrigant for root canal preparation is sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). This solution may affect the dentin micro hardness. Propolis extract as an alternative materials have been used as an irrigant because of their anti-bacterial effect is similar to sodium hypochlorite. This study’s purpose was to know the difference of the effect between propolis extract 8% and 2.5% NaOCl as an irrigant to root canal dentin microhardness and to know which one irrigant has less reduction to root canal dentin microhardness. The sample for this study was 32 mandibular permanent premolars. The crown was separated and the root canal was prepared using crown down technique. The root separates the buccal and lingual portions longitudinally and and embedded in autopolymerizing acrylic resin, leaving the dentin surface exposed. Micro hardness was tested at three points in the mid-root using Vicker's micro hardness tester. The sample was divided into two groups each soaked in irrigant for 5 minutes. Group I: 2.5% NaOCl and group II: 8% propolis extract. After soaking the value of micro hardness dentin of the root canal was taken back to get the pre and post preference value. The result in this study shown that the average value decrease of dentin micro hardness 8% propolis extract group was 3,74 VHN and 2,5% NaOCl group is 8,69 VHN. Differences in mean values of both groups were analyzed using independent t-test. The result of statistical test shows that there was significant difference between the two groups with significance value p = 0,000 (p <0,05). The conclusion of this study showed there was different effect of 8% propolis extract and 2,5% NaOCl as an irrigant to dentin micro hardness of the root canal. The 8% propolis extract irrigant results decrease dentin micro hardness less than 2,5% NaOCl.
