Abstract
This research aims to describe the implementation of teaching oral skill using Genre-based Approach by describing the procedures of teaching oral skill using Genre-based Approach, kinds of activities carried out during oral cycle, and the problems faced by the teacher. This research is an ethnographic research. To collect the data, the writer takes some methods, namely (1) observation, (2) document, and (3) interview. The result of this research shows that the procedure used by the teacher at SMPN 3 Jatipuro, Karanganyar is appropriate with the theory of Genre. There are two pattern; BKOF-MOT-JCOT-ICOT and BKOF-MOT-ICOT. This research also shows the kinds of classroom activities in each stage. In BKOF, the activities are asking questions and giving explanation; giving model of text is the activity in MOT; in JCOT, the activity is making group in doing activities; giving the task for homework in ICOT. The research also shows the problems faced by the teacher, namely the students’ incapability in vocabulary and pronunciation, the teacher’s difficulty in managing the class, and different capability of the students. Based on the result, the conclusion of this research is the teacher implements the theory of Genre. Although, the teacher takes the procedure of using Genre-based Approach, the teacher seldom uses Joint Construction of the Text (JCOT). The teacher focuses more on the Independent Construction of the Text (ICOT).
