Abstract
The essential oil of lime leaves (Citrus hystrix D.C) has an antibacterial active ingredient. The use of the carbopol 940 as a gelling agent may increase the viscosity so as to affect the release of the drug to the gel. The purpose of this research is to know the influence of carbopol and glycerin base on test of physical properties of gel and its activity against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The essential oil of lime leaves (Citrus hystrix D.C) is obtained by using steam distillation method. Gel is made into 4 formulas using factorial design method with different concentrations of carbopoles 940 and glycerin F1 (2:30), F2 (0.5: 30), F3 (2:15) and F4 (0.5: 15). Evaluation of gel preparation is physical characteristic test (organoleptis test, homogenity, pH, viscosity, adhesion, and scatter) and antibacterial activity test against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The results show that the addition of the amount of carbopol 940 to the essential oil gel of kaffir lime leaves can decrease the pH value, increase the viscosity value, increase the stickiness value, and decrease the power value of spread. The activity against antibacterials showed that different concentrations of carbopol and glycerin in gel preparations could increase the value of antibacterial activity. From the test obtained the optimum formula that is in formula 3 by comparison concentration of carbopol:glycerin (2:15).
