Abstract
There are several types of soils that have unsuitable properties for the construction that has low carrying capacity, low shear strength, and large shrinkage of soil. One effort to increase the bearing capacity of the soil is by using soil reinforcement. The retrofitting of sand columns used on footprints as vertical drainage is a solution to increase the bearing capacity of the soil. This research was carried out six laboratory tests consist of two non sand column test and four test using circular sand columns with diameter of sand columns 10 cm and 15 cm and width of square palm base 10x10 cm and 15x15 cm in clay by maintaining Moisture content and compaction method. Based on the test results it can be seen that the greater the diameter of the maximum loaded sand column that is held larger and the decrease is smaller. While enlarging the width of the base of the palm of the square will be obtained the value of the soil bearing capacity is greater and the decrease is smaller than increasing the diameter of the sand column.
