Abstract

People with mental disorders desperately need the support of the closest people especially the social support of the family. Social support is a support that shows that a person is loved and cared for, valued, respected, and engaged in mutual communication and liaison networks. People with mental disorders often care less about self-care. Patients lacking self-care will be rejected by society because of poor personal hygiene, the client considers himself incapable to overcome his shortcomings. This study aims to determine the relationship between family social support with independence in patients with mental disorders in Poly Rawat Jalan RSJD Dr. RM. Soedjarwadi. This research is descriptive correlation research with cross sectional approach. The population of the study was Population in Poly Rawat Jalan RSJD Dr. RM. Soedjarwadi is the average of 2016 visits per month for 1690 people with mental disorders, while the sample of 94 families of patients with mental disorders accidental sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires analyzed using chi square test. The result of this research is Chi Square test, the value of 2 was 12,797 with the significance level (p-value) 0,012, and the test decision was rejected H0. while the contingency coefficient value was 0,346. The conclusions of the study were (1) family social support in psychiatric patients in outpatient clinic of RSJD Dr. RM. Soedjarwadi Klaten was mostly moderate, (2) independence in psychiatric patients in outpatient clinic of RSJD Dr. RM. Soedjarwadi Klaten was largely moderate, and (3) there was a relationship of family social support with self-reliance in psychiatric patients in the outpatient clinic of RSJD Dr. RM. Soedjarwadi Klaten, where the higher the social support of the family then the independence of patients mental disorders getting better.
