Abstract
Salmonella parathypi A is a bacteria that causes paratyphoid fever. It becomes one of the major public health problems for developing countries such as Indonesia. Many antibiotics are used to cure it, such as amoxicillin, chloramphenicol, ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin. The use of antibiotics irrationally leads to increased bacterial resistance against some drugs. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and study antibacterial compounds against S. parathypi A. The purposes of this study were to find antibacterial agents from medicinal plants such as guava, mint leaves, lemongrass leaves, Ambon banana stems, and ginger rhizome, and identify the class of compounds that have the highest antibacterial activity against S. paratyphi A. The disc diffusion method was used to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of guava leaves, mint leaves, lemongrass leaves, ambon banana stems and ginger rhizome against S. parathypi A. Identification of compounds were done using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). Bioautography was used to detect classes of compounds that have antibacterial activity. The results showed that guava leaves, lemongrass leaves, ambon banana bark and ginger rhizome have antibacterial activity against S. paratyphi A, except mint leaf extract. Ginger rhizome has the highest antibacterial activity with diameter of inhibition zone of 10,83 ± 1,04 mm. Compounds identified in ginger rhizome extract were alkaloids, polyphenols, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and terpenoids. Groups of compounds suspected of having antibacterial activity against S. paratyphi A were tannins and polyphenols.
