Abstract

Today, in addition to as a communication tool, some people also use social media as a means of showing their self-existences. Following popularity that has been achieved by Facebook and Twitter, a new social media emerged, namely Path. Path gained popularity among Indonesian people because the social media provided its users an easy way to present themselves via moments feature in the application. Purpose of the research was to know what is process of self-presentation conducted by students of Communication Science Faculty, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta of 2014 through moments feature of Path application in order to receive impression from other users. Theory used in the research was impression management theory, an expanded Dramaturgy theory of Erving Goffman. The research was descriptive-qualitative one and data was collected by observation, interview and documentation methods. Informants of the research were four active students of Communication Science Faculty, Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta of 2014 who used Path social media actively. Findings of the research showed that the four informants had several special strategies to present themselves via Path social media. Most applied strategy was ingratiation. Most informants had showed their best aspects when they were presenting themselves through moments feature of Path social media. They did that to obtain positive self-impression according to other users. The most used Moments feature to present oneself was Place/Share Location and Photos and Videos.
