Abstract

Prisoners are term for perpetrators of crime within Penitentiary as well as in the State Prison. Their punishment began since the verdict was decided. Inmates who live in prison undeniable has a serious problem on their psychological condition, not to mention depression. Their condition shows that they need more support from the people around them, especially friends and family. The purpose of this research is to investigate relation of influence of social support to the prisoner’s depression. The hypothesis proposed is to state that there is a negative correlation for social support and depression to prisoner’s condition. Fifty prisoners in cell block two B from Purwodadi prison used as subject for this research. The sampling technique used purposive sampling technique and data collection using social support scale with Beck Depression Inventory scale. Pearson Correlation or Product Moment Correlation used as data analysis technique. The result shows that the proposed hypothesis is a accepted that there is a significant negative correlation between social support and depression to prisoners in cell block two B in Purwodadi. The higher social support, the lower levels of depression they got, whereas the lower social support, the higher level of depression they got. The level of social support variables classified as normal, indicated by value of RE by 108,90 and value of RH is 100. Depressed variable is also classified as normal with the value of RE by 33,34 and 31,5 for RH. The effective contribution of social support by 31%, indicates that there are other factors that may affect depression level.
