Abstract

Background : Exclusive breastfeeding is a program recommended by WHO. Exclusive breastfeeding is given only breast milk without complementary food since he/she was born until the age of 6 months except vitamins and immunizations. In Karanganyar District, the percentage of Exclusive Breastfeeding is 60.26%, which is still far from the national target set by the Ministry of Health in 2014 by 80%. This indicates the existence of various factors that influence the exclusive breast feeding. Objective : This research aims to study the relationship between mother’s level of education, mother's knowledge, husband support, health workers support and mother's working status on exclusive breastfeeding in the working area of Puskesmas Karanganyar. Method : This research is an analytic observational study with cross sectional approach. The number of samples used were 80 respondents taken with cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires which aimed to enforce the restriction criteria as well as to obtain data on mother’s level of education, mother's knowledge, husband support, health workers support, mother's working status and exclusive breastfeeding status. Data were analyzed using Chi-Square test and logistic regression with SPSS 21.0 for Windows. Results : Statistical analysis showed that there is a significant relationship between husband support (p = 0,002; OR = 4,605; CI 95% 1,7171 2,351) with exclusive breastfeeding. Other variables such as mother’s level of education, mother's knowledge, health workers support and mother’s working status do not show a significant relationship. Conclusion : The results of this study concluded that the factor which could affect exclusive breastfeeding is husband support for the mother.
