Abstract
Theobroma cacao L. contains flavonoids. Flavonoid is one of the antioxidants works by scavenging free radicals that can prevent and inhibit LDL oxidation invitro. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of chocolate (Theobroma cacao L.) that can decrease of LDL levels in mice (Mus musculus) swiss strain.This study was experimental laboratory with pre and post test method with control group design. The study was conducted on 25 Mus musculus Swiss strain induced by PTU and high cholesterol feed for 7 days. Subjects were divided into 5 groups: negative control, positive control with simvastatin (0.0364 mg / 20gBW/day), treatment group 1 (0,196 mg/20gBW/day), treatment group 2(0,392 mg/20gBW/day), and treatment group 3 (combination of extract of chocolate at dose of 0,392 mg/20gBW/day and simvastatin at dose of 0,0182 mg/ 20grBW/day). Measurements of LDL cholesterol were performed on day 7, day 14, and day 28. The Kruskal-wallis statistical tests showed p=0,003 (p<0,05), so there was a significant difference in LDL levels between groups.The results of post-treatment show between negative control with treatment 1 p=0,034, negative control with treatment 2 p=0,021, negative control with treatment 3 p=0,034. The results of Mann-Whitney test was obtained all of doses have a significant different against negative control with p<0,05. The 70% ethanol extract of chocolate (Theobroma cacao L.) doses I, II and combination between the 70% ethanol extract of chocolate (Theobroma cacao L.) and simvastatin have effect on decreasing levels of LDL level.
