Abstract
Energy is a fundamental demand in economic and social development. The growth of population and economic causes the increase of energy demand. Wind energy is a potential source of renewable energy to supply of energy demand. Wind turbine rotor is a mechanical equipment that works to convert kinetic energy contained in wind energy into mechanical power. The aim of this study is to compare the performance characteristics of two wind turbine rotor models. This study used two wind turbine rotor models with different blade geometry, uniform airfoil rotor with primary airfoil NREL S812 and mixed airfoil rotor with airfoil at root: NREL S814, mid: NREL S812, and on the tip: NREL S813. The blade material used is glass-fiber reinforced plastics (GRP) with molds made using CNC milling 3 axis and using polyurethane foam as a structure. The tests were performed at different angle of attack 0˚, 5 ˚, 10 ˚, 15 ˚, 20 ˚, 25 ˚, 30 ˚, and 35˚ angles at wind speed of 4m / s, with a 3-watt lamp load. Based on the researches, it was found that the two rotor models have an optimum angle of 5 ˚. Uniform airfoil rotor produces highest an average voltage of 2.78 v and highest average power of 0.38 w. Mixed airfoil rotor produces highest average voltage of 3.23 v and highest average voltage of 0.46 w. From result of discussion concluded that mixed airfoil rotor have better performance than uniform airfoil rotor at optimum angle of attack.
