Abstract
ABSTRACT The background of this research is the principal who has an important role or central in the development of school organization. In order for schools to compete headmasters should be committed to change by applying transformational leadership styles. Transformational leadership in addition to a well-known leadership style that is able to transform the organization into a better direction, is also known to improve the performance of teachers and employees at school. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of transformational leadership of the principal and its development in improving the performance of teachers and employees in MTs Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research, and wake phenomenology approach. Data were colected with interview, observation, and documentation. The results of this study indicate: First, the characteristics of headmaster leadership are in accordance with the characteristics of transformational leadership or called the four dimensions of transformational leadership namely idealized influence, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and individualized considerations, but researchers found the deficiency of principals in applying to four this dimension so as to raise the inefficiency of school principals in improving the performance of teachers and employees at MTs Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Second, in order for the principal leadership to apply transfromational leadership style in order to improve the performance of teachers and richwomen successfully, it is necessary to develop teacher transformational principals' implementation in order to improve teacher and employee performance in MTs Muhammadiyah Suakarta, this development includes: creating teacher and employee performance improvement categories , improving the welfare of teachers and employees, improving school facilities, and internalizing the values that exist within the school's vision, mission and objectives into teachers and employees.
