Abstract

Klaten Regency is a buffer district of two major cities, Yogyakarta and Surakarta, which allow the development of green land changes. The presence of reduced vegetation / green space has an impact on biomass depletion as a controller of carbon dioxide emissions. An alternative to estimating the carbon dioxide absorption capability by vegetation using a remote sensing approach based on surface biomass content. The objectives of the research were (1) to know the magnitude of the relation of vegetation index with surface biomass in absorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) and (2) to analyze the distribution and amount of absorption of surface biomass to carbon dioxide (CO2) in Klaten District. The method used is secondary data analysis method with field survey using NDII vegetation index, calculation of biomass content using approach by George W. Cox (1976), as well as an estimation of the ability of absorption based on photosynthetic reaction equation. The results of the research are (1) NDII vegetation index and surface biomass have moderate correlation with correlation value (r) of 0.734 which showed higher vegetation index will be higher biomass content and mathematical equation of regression result for surface biomass estimation is Y = 82,141X - 5,8885 and (2) the amount of capability of biomass absorption to CO2 in Klaten Regency is 8,566,445 kg with the highest absorption capacity in Kemalang District at 1,347,334.8 kg while the lowest absorption capacity in Kecamatan Klaten Tengah is 44,413.4 kg.The level of biomass absorption capacity of CO2 is influenced by the type of vegetation land use and vegetation density.
