Abstract

In long distance marriage relationship, couples will be separated by distance and time. Usually couples decide to go through a long-distance relationship bacause of work or study in other town. Sometimes, in a longdistance relationship, the couple miss each other because they can’t see each other. However, along with the times, media improve something that can help for long distance couples by video chat. The couples can meet face to face even virtually. The media helps couple to feel emotional closeness even though they can’t meet in person. This study aims to determine how video chat is able to bring intimacy among married couples over long distances. In this study the researchers used a qualitative approach to content analysis. The method used for data retrieval is semi-structured interview. Data collection methodsusing purposive sampling technique with some criteria of informant that is 1) Couple long distance marriage amounted 3 pairs. 2) The location of the couple is in the area of Java (Husband or Wife). 3) Couples aged 21-30 years. 4) Using video chat communication tools skype, hangout or other computer-based video chat. The results in this study are Intimacy can be realized by providing emotional closeness can be created with intensive communication, mutual attention to the couple. In addition, with self-disclosure can be shown by exchanging thoughts with a partner. Intimacy ca be realized by 3 categories, among others: emotional closeness to the couple, sharing experiences with couples and self disclosure with long distance marriage partner.
