Abstract
Interpersonal communication between nurses and the elderly determines the convenience of the elderly in the nursing home environment. Closeness is the key to a successful and intimate communication process. Nursing home is an elderly shelter as a place to care and accommodate elderly. In nursing homes, nurses play a significant role in the process of interpersonal communication in the daily activities between nurses and the elderly. The purpose of this research was to find out how the interpersonal communication is done by nurses in building closeness with elderly. The type of research used was qualitative research with descriptive approach. Data collection technique applied in depth interview with nurses and non-participant observation. Sampling is taken using purposive sampling by taking 4 informants, 2 nurses handling elderly citizens and 2 senior nurses. The results of research related to the process of how to build closeness through the stages of social penetration. The nurses treat the elderly by growing a sense of comfort and creating an environment with a warm atmosphere filled with hospitality and comfort. That was the way that nurses did in building intimate closeness. Furthermore,the closeness that has been formed was judged from the five general qualities of interpersonal communication, of which each of these general qualities, required closeness between the nurse and the elderly in order to achieve good and qualified interpersonal communication. In addition to the closeness that has been formed, the nurses convey and try to understand the characterization of each elderly, and it also became an important point in an interpersonal relationship.
