Abstract
Electrical system protection planning is vital in power systems. A good and reliable protection system must have the ability to detect interference and prevent interference. A short circuit is a common type of disturbance in electrical systems. Overcurrent relay(OCR) as one of the protection equipment has function to prevent and protect electric power system from short circuit interference. PT SMART Tbk, Tarjun Unit is a palm oil processing industry whose production process has to go through refinery and fractionation process at 500oC – 1000oC, so that cooling tower is needed to prevent overheating of the plant, which can disrupt production. Protection system that currently works CWP cooling tower motor in the form of fuse, low voltage circuit breaker, and high voltage circuit breaker is still less than the maximum. This study aims to provide the design of a reliable protection system on the installation of cooling tower power, especially CWP motors. The study was conducted by collecting data related to the system and the load to be protected and simulated using ETAP software series 16.0.0. The relay discrimination method is used to determine the position and location of the overcurrent relay. Short circuit analysis results into a reference for setting up pick up and time dial on more current relays. The final result achieved in this research is that the longer the relay with the generator the faster the time dial setting.
