Abstract
The Brake pad is one of part on braking system that function for reduce vehicle’s speed with resist friction tromol or disc brake. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is one of the composite material to make the brake pad. In this experiment aims to knowing the influence of magnesium oxides variation with matrix phenolic resin and filler CNSL powder to wearness, hardness and friction coefficient on the making of brake pad. This experiment did making brake pad using a composite method with mix some material, also with pressure and sintering. The material was used on this experiment are magnesium oxide powder, calcium carbonate powder, phenolic resin powder, CNSL powder, graphite powder, aluminium powder, brass powder, fiberglass, ramie fiber, epoxy resin (A) and epoxy hardener (B) with varying weight MgO that are 3 gram, 4 gram and 5 gram. Then hardness testing and friction test. The result of wearness testing brake pad is good average wearness value on dry and salt water testing is brake pad variation 5 gram MgO powder are 307,2 mm3/hour and 323,18 mm3/hour. However water, oil and brake fluid testing is brake pad variation 4 gram MgO powder are 226,22 mm3/hour, 500,92 mm3/hour and 323,18 mm3/hour. The result of hardness testing by highest average value is brake pad variation 5 gram MgO powder is 88,50 Shore D. The best result of friction coefficient on dry testing is brake pad variation 3 gram MgO powder is 0,5 and salt water testing is brake pad variaton 4 gram MgO powder is 0,46. The good value of friction coefficient testing on water testing are brake pad variation 3 and 4 gram MgO powder is 0,44 and oil testing are brake pad variation 4 and 5 gram MgO powder is 0,46. The best result friction coefficient testing using brake fluid is brake pad variation 5 gram MgO powder is 0,46.
