Abstract
Background: Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by progressive damage and loss of joint cartilage, in which the entire joint undergoes structural and functional changes including synovium, meniscus, ligaments and subchondral bones. The common symptom of osteoarthritis sufferers is pain. In addition to disrupting functional activities, pain can also interfere with various aspects of a patient's life which can affect the daily life, physical, mental health, social relationships and quality of life of the sufferer. Objective: To determine the relationship between pain intensity and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Method: This research is an observational study with a cross sectional study design. This research was conducted at the Medical Rehabilitation Clinic of Bhayangkara Hospital in August 2020. The population of this study were all Knee osteoarthritis patients. The research sample consisted of 30 respondents. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Measuring instruments in this study are Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for measuring pain and Short Form-36 for measuring quality of life. The data analysis method used is the chi-square test. Results: Based on the results of the measurement of pain, most of them experienced mild pain as much as 56.36% and the results of measuring the quality of life, most of them had good health as much as 90.6%. Based on the results of the chi-square test, it was found that there was a significant relationship between pain intensity and quality of life. p value = 0.002. Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between pain intensity and quality of life in knee osteoarthritis patients at the Medical Rehabilitation Clinic of Bhayangkara Hospital.
