Abstract
CLAY STABILIZATION USING MILL TOWARDS SHEAR STRENGTH AT NAMBUHAN, PURWODADI, GROBOGAN ABSTRACT In Indonesia, there are many damaged roads and buildings. One of the damaged roads is at Nambuhan village, Purwodadi regency. The roads are mostly holey and wavy. The soil in this area has high shrinkage or usually called as clay. One of the ways to solve the problem is conducting stabilization using addictive material of mill with various percentage of 0%, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%. This research is aimed to know the big influence of mixture percentage towards physical and mechanical characteristic and long care of shear strength value. Physical testing consisted of several experiments such as water content, specific gravity (Gs), and Atterberg’s limit. Meanwhile, mechanical testing consisted of Standard Proctor and shear strength testing. The result of physical characteristic testing can be obtained as follows; value of water content is 11,82%, specific gravity is 2,570, liquid limit is 84,70%, plastic limit is 33,35%, shrinkage limit is 28,52%, plastic index is 51,35% and percentage of filter pass No. 200 is 94,01%. In mixture soil, there was reduction on the value of water content, specific gravity, liquid limit and filter pass No. 200. Meanwhile, the value of shrinkage and plastic limit increased. Based on AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) method, the classification of original and mixed soil belonged to A-7-5 group. Based on USCS (Unified Soil Classification System), original soil belonged to CH group and mixed soil with 3%, 6%, 9%, 12% percentage belonged to MH group. In the testing of soil condensation, the maximal dry volume increased and optimal water content reduced. In DST (Direct Shear Test), the value of mixed soil cohesion increased and friction angle reduced as the percentage of mill increased. The highest value of cohesion was 1,488%, and the smallest value of friction angle was 3,190 in the mixed soil of 12% with four days’ care. The highest value of shear strength occurred on original soil with 1,904 kg/cm2. Keywords: cohesion, shear strength, mill, stabilization, deep friction angle, clay.
