Abstract
Biodiesel is an environmentally friendly renewable energy alternative. Biodiesel is generally produced by reaction of vegetable oil or animal fat and methanol in the presence of a catalyst to produce glycerol and methyl esters. The reaction in the manufacture of biodiesel is a transesterification reaction. In this study the esterification process for the reaction between used cooking oil and methanol with 3% (weight) H2SO4 catalyst was carried out before transesterification. Obtained free fatty acids <2% i.e. 0,9326%. In this study the CaO catalyst was prepared by calcining the shell of the egg that had been cleaned and crushed at 1000°C for 120 minutes to obtain the active CaO. Characterization using XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) showed different results for open and closed conditions catalyst treatment. The catalyst will be contaminated with air to form Ca(OH)2 when left open. While active CaO catalysts formed in closed conditions are then used in the manufacture of biodiesel with raw materials used waste cooking oil and methanol. The variables studied in this research were oil ratio: methanol expressed 1: 1, 1: 3, 1: 5, 1: 7, and 1: 9 to conversion of used waste cooking oil. Based on the result of the research, the maximum conversion that can be achieved is 0,8862 under heavy reaction condition of CaO 6% weight the catalyst, reaction time 180 minutes and reaction temperature 800°C. Based on the results of the analysis, the biodiesel obtained meets liquid fuel standards and can be used as a substitute petroleum diesel fuel.
