Abstract
The acid base indicators are indispensable in the process of science learning in secondary schools, especially to support the concept of mastery on certain materials. One of the chapters requires practical learning materials are acid-base material classification of substances. The four o'clock petal has anthocyanin content that can be used as an alternative acid-base indicator. The aim of this research is to know the color change of indicator paper from the four o'clock petal extract with the variation of drying temperature and solvent type can be used as alternative acid-base indicator. This research used experimental method with complete randomized design (RAL) using two treatment factors ie drying temperature and solvent type. The drying temperature used 50◦C and 70◦C, whereas the type of solvent used aquades, ethanol 70%, and ethanol 70% + HCL. The results showed that the drying temperature had an effect on the sharpness of the indicator paper from the four o'clock petal extract, while the type of solvent had an effect on the test result with acid-base solution. Acid base indicator paper with a drying temperature of 70◦C and macerated with 70% ethanol solvent provides a more contrasting color in distinguishing strong acid, mild acidic, strong base and mild base.
