Abstract

This research paper studies the types of exposition patterns and the elements of exposition discourse through discourse analysis. The data are taken from School Zone column of Cool and Smart magazine edition vol. 5 no. 37 january – vol. 6 no. 44 december 2006. The objectives of this research are 1) to describe the exposition patterns from the data and 2) to describe the elements of exposition discourse from the data. In collecting the data, the researcher uses the documentation method. The crucial objectives of this research are the first is to determine the types of exposition patterns used in the data. The second is to analyse the elements of exposition discourse of the data. To obtain the objectives, the researcher collects the data from School Zone column of C n S magazine. The data from magazine are analysed based on the types of exposition patterns and the elements of exposition discourse. The results of this research paper are first is about types of exposition patterns. It is found one description pattern, one process analysis pattern, and five illustration pattern. Second is dealing with the elements of exposition discourse. It is found that the data consist of the first and the second element (thesis and argument), but in the third element, the data consist of five summing up, and two recommendation. From the analysis the researcher concludes that 1) the most type of exposition patterns in the data is illustration 2) the data involve thesis and argument elements while in the third element, the most element is summing up.
