Abstract
Introduction : Autism is one of conditions that affects how brain works, which causes problem to communicate and the presence of nuisance behaviour. Food should be carefully choosen for autistic children, because controling the diet can improve the condition of the child. Avoiding foods that contain gluten or casein is one of efforts to reduce autistic behaviours. Objective : to know the relationship between frequency of gluten and casein consumption with autistic behavior in autistic children aged 5 – 12 years old. Research methods : The research was an observational , using cross-sectional design. Research subjects were 26 children who met the criteria for inclusion. The research was carried out for four months in the year 2016, with the location of the studies in Mutiara Center, Surakarta Autism Service Center, and Mitra Ananda of Karanganyar. Consumption patterns of gluten and casein score data were obtained using FFQ method which have been modified, while the autistic behavioral data were obtained through observation of behavior using questionnaire filled in by therapists. Statistic test used Pearson Product Moment. Result : Result of the bivariate analysis showed that there was relationship between food consumption frequency sources of gluten and casein with autistic behaviour of autistic children aged 5 – 12 years old (p=0,005). Distribution of consumption frequency between score 50 – 100 was 65.4% with decrease in autistic behavior amounted to 73%. The most commonly consumed foods were wafer, ice cream and noodles with an average consumption between 1 – 2x/week. Conclusion : There was correlation between frequency of gluten and casein consumption with autistic behaviour in autistic children aged 5 – 12 years old. Keyword : autism children, gluten, casein, autistic behaviour.
