Abstract

This study aims to understand and describe the impact of the behavior of adolescents who experience internet addiction toward social interaction in boarding halls. This research uses qualitative approach. Informants in this study selected with proportional purposive random sampling, the subject of this study were students of Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, amounting to 6 subjects consist of 3 subjects of male and 3 subjects of female. Data collection techniques used in this study are interviews and observation. The results of the study illustrate that Internet addiction has a positive and negative impact on social interaction in adolescents. In viewed of the positive impact, internet addiction can provide many facilities for adolescents such as facilitate communication with each other or exchange news when their distance away, facilitate the completion of tasks and simplify in obtaining a lot of the latest information. In viewed of the negative impact, adolescents tend to put forward activities to access the internet and prefer to delay activities related to direct social interaction. Beside impacting social interactions internet addiction also has a positive and negative impact on other aspects such as clinical, academic, religious, and economy.
