Abstract
This research paper is mainly intended to find out to what extend “Let’s Talk” English textbook develops the learners’ communicative competence. This research applies descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer used documentary analysis especially in content analysis as an instrument. The data will be analyzed by these steps; (1) reading textbook (2) accessing information related to the object of the study (3) arranging the data into several parts according to its classification (4) selecting a particular parts that are considered important and relevant for the analysis (5) drawing conclusions. The result of the analysis indicates that “too much” tasks are intended to develop discourse competence (104 tasks) and linguistic competence (101 tasks). In addition, the writer finds “inadequate” tasks in actional competence (39 tasks), socio-cultural competence (51 tasks) and strategic competence (22 tasks). It means that the textbook is not equally distributed to develop the learners’ communicative competence. In this study, the writer also finds some aspects of competencies that are not included in textbook. Those are problem’s aspect, appropriateness factors, achievement strategies and interactional strategies. This research implies that the textbook entitled “Let’s Talk” is not equally distributed to develop the learners’ communicative competence. So the tasks must equally distribute to develop the learners’ communicative competence well.
